SkillsUSA helps the homeless

February 23, 2017

On February 23, five SkillsUSA students joined Acts 4 staff to bring clothes to the homeless at The Hospitality Center.  They were greeted by Shakirah Howard, the center’s director, and given jobs.  Everyone helped to set up a “store”, organizing the clothes by size.  Then, students helped each client to select clothing for the new season.  The clients also had the opportunity to do their laundry, take a shower, use the computer to look for jobs, and enjoy donated pastries.  Our students helped in all of those areas and worked at the reception desk.

This community service trip was part of Kaynor’s SkillsUSA Chapter’s partnership with Acts 4, an organization that helps the homeless get set up in a home.  One of the ways Acts 4 raises money is by running a thrift store.  They also have a warehouse full of donated furniture and housewares to help those in need.  We have worked there on several occasions.  Most recently, the Carpentry seniors along with their department head, Mr. Denote, repaired furniture and tested donated bed frames for stability.  On other visits, we have sorted through and washed donated items, helped to input data from client applications, and straightened up the store.
